Britain no more

For the past 20 years Britain, along with the USA, has led the worldwide crusade to privatise public services, deregulate big business, and slash taxes for the rich.

Under Margaret Thatcher London became the greed capital of Europe. Under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown the rich kept growing richer and richer. They told us the wealth would trickle down, but it never did. It cascaded upwards.

Britain today has the widest wealth gap of any state in Europe, and by far the most millionaires and billionaires. It has the most repressive anti-trade union legislation on the continent. It has most of Europe’s nuclear weapons – and they’ve been dumped on Scotland’s doorstep, just 20 miles from Glasgow city centre.

Yet the three big Westminster parties all want more of the same. All of them support nuclear weapons.

They all want more privatisation. They all advocate brutal spending cuts to balance the books.

They have nothing to offer the people of Scotland.

The SSP is an internationalist party. We work with other left wing and progressive forces across Europe to curb big business and shift the balance of wealth and power towards working people and their families.

We are also a pro-independence party, which believes that Scotland should break free of the Westminster rule.

We have serious political differences with the SNP.

We will work with Scotland’s two other pro-independence parties – the SNP and the Greens – to rid Scotland of nuclear weapons; to oppose privatisation and cuts in our public services; to slash carbon emissions; and to welcome to our country those fleeing war, famine and persecution.

But we want a Scotland built on different foundations. We want a republic rather than a monarchy. We want wealth redistribution rather than corporate tax cuts. WE want a country which puts people before profit.

We want an independent socialist Scotland.
